Signet
rings by Tom Hubbard Fine Jewellery
I carry a comprehensive range of all types of
wedding rings. I use platinum, 18ct white gold, 18ct yellow gold
, 18ct rose gold and paladium. The two most traditional styles
of wedding rings are the court shape and the D shape. Both of
these styles of wedding ring come in 2 different weights, light
and heavy.
The other main styles of wedding ring are
the reverse D, the tube shape and the ‘loaf’ shape
(this shape of wedding band is similar to most shanks on the engagement
ring hence its popularity). Paladium is becoming a more popular
metal for wedding rings however the most popular metals remain
platinum and gold. The difference between white gold and platinum
wedding rings is twofold. Firstly platinum is more expensive than
either 18ct or 9ct white gold and secondly gold is yellow. White
gold has a variety of other metals to make it ‘white’
but is polished and then plated in rhodium.
The rhodium plating wears away fairly rapidly
which is why white gold wedding rings look more tired than platinum
wedding rings once they have been worn for a while. Wedding rings
for women normally start at a width of 2mm and go up to 4mm. In
certain cases they go wider but the norm is between 2mm and 3.5mm.
Wedding rings for men tend to start at a width of 3.5mm to 6mm.
